Every so often, they show up on internet marketing forums: people claiming they’ve discovered a foolproof “black hat” search engine optimization technique. For a price, they say their method will push your website to the top of the search engine results—and, of course, they promise you’ll never get caught.
But think about it. We’d all like to believe there’s a way to reach number one in Google with no real effort, but that simply isn’t true. Google is huge, and it’s smart. There’s no denying that people using “black hat” techniques—a phrase used to describe methods that violate Google’s, or another search engine’s, terms of service—may see some success at first. But it won’t last. It never does. In fact, they’ll be lucky if it works for more than a few days.
Let’s say these forum peddlers really had discovered a flawless technique that guaranteed top rankings in search results. Do you honestly think they’d be selling it for a few dollars on forums? No, of course not. If the method actually worked, they’d be building small affiliate websites in every profitable niche, applying their black hat SEO magic, and sitting back while the profits rolled in. And the more they publicize their method, the more likely Google is to discover it—so why would they take that risk?
They wouldn’t, because these methods don’t exist. Avoid them. Don’t waste your money buying the method, then waste even more time and money trying to build and use it on a website. It’s doomed to fail.
