SEO: A Tool For Boosting Your Ranking, Not A Silver Bullet

Many people understand just enough about the Internet and search engines to know that search engine optimization matters, but not enough to realize that it won’t magically solve every problem. SEO is not something you add to a website and then simply wait for visitors to arrive. Yes, it is important, and yes, it is a smart and useful concept. But poor or careless SEO will not increase your website traffic any more than handing out free balloons will send an ice cream shop’s profits through the roof. It can help, but it is not the whole story.

There is little value in setting up a website, paying lip service to the basics of SEO — adding a few backlinks elsewhere, using some keywords, and submitting a sitemap — and then complaining when readers do not come flooding in: “but it had SEO! Clearly SEO isn’t as good as I was told it was!” When applied properly, SEO can certainly improve your Google ranking. Whether it gets you to the first page of results is another matter, and only time will tell. Still, it is useful.

The major mistake is treating SEO as a silver bullet that will make all the difference on its own. If that were true, Google rankings would be meaningless because everyone would simply add SEO to their site and compete on equal terms. What matters most is remembering that good SEO combined with good content is the strongest formula for improving Google rankings.
